Name: Leigh Anne Wilkes
Business Direct Sales for 17 years, top leader in my company
Yes - four! Two boys who are both in college - ages 23 and 21 and two daughters - one a senior in high school, age 18 (yes I will have three in college next year) and another daughter who is a freshman in high school, age 14.
When we were first married my husband and I decided that one of our priorities was to be able to have me stay home when we had children (3 years after we were married the first one arrived) so I worked up until the day before our first was born and have been home ever since. But I have always had some type of home based business. I have always had a weakness for clothes and I love to shop so I began my direct sales business 17 years ago so I could earn some extra spending cash of my own so my husband wouldn't "fuss' when I brought home those new pair of shoes or Nordstrom's shopping bag - The income grew to much more than just "extra spending cash" and is now a full time income Last year when my husband found himself unexpectedly employed twice within a year my money became "the money".
I am currently a top leader with the direct sales company, Creative Memories. .
I believe that in order to be successful at whatever you do you have to have a love and a passion for what you do and a belief in your product. When I discovered Creative Memories the values and mission of the company "fit" with my personal values. I had been a scrapbooker since I was 12 years old and Creative Memories' products were a solution to a problem for me so I figured other people needed the same solution (photo safe supplies)
The women I have met through my business. I have been blessed to meet and work with some of the most amazing women. I met two of my best friends through my company. These women motivate me and inspire me to be a better business woman, mother and person!
17 years When I started I had 3 children - 1 year old, 4 year old and 6 year old
Probably the thing that has been the biggest challenge has also been the biggest blessing - working from home. When you have four little children running around, making noise, needing your attention, making messes etc. it can be hard to focus, even when they are in school there are lots of other things to distract you!
My biggest success with my business has been learning to balance home, family and business. I have been able to work a part time business, earn a full time income and keep my priorities in order
I have worked my business many different ways - depending on the "season" my family was in . That is one of the biggest perks of a homebased business - the flexibility it gives you. For me, one of the best ways I have found balance is through a technique called calendar blocking. Depending on my "season" and the number of hours I have to work my business I schedule those hours into a calendar block (using an excel spreadsheet on my computer) each week - I don't leave it to chance when I will work my business. I so believe author Tom Barrett when he said, "You can work your business part time, you can work it full time but you can't work it in your spare time." Who has spare time these days! I don't leave my business to chance - hoping I can fit it in amongst the other things in my life. I make a committment to a certain amount of time and then schedule that time in each week.
Learn to be consistent. Over the last 17 years I have worked my business at different levels but I have always worked it. I don't start and stop my business. Even if it is only making one phone call or filing one piece of paper. I believe in doing something everyday for my business (working days that is!) When I first started my business I made a committment to 3 things -
Time -a certain amount of time each week, currently 15-20 hours
Action - I would spend that time in the most important income producting parts of my business
Consistency - I would do something for my business everyday , no matter how big or how small.
What are your business goals for 2008?
This year one of my focuses is to improve my coaching skills. I have been taking a leadership course through the DSWA, reading and studying. I hope that these skills will improve my one - on - one coaching I do with my team members. I find that the coaching I do with team members is one of the best things I do for my business and my team.
